Clubs and associations of the Jewish Community of Berlin

The Integration Department also has the responsibility of supporting the activities of the community’s clubs and associations. Many of these organisations have been doing volunteer integration work long before the establishment of the Integration Department.

The diverse appeal of the Jewish community is closely – and inextricably - bound to the community’s approach to differences among its members. Readiness to accept or embrace diversity is a quality that promotes intercultural competence, vibrancy and the capacity to act – which can only be advantageous.

This also provides a basis for coexistence within the community, which sees an enormous potential in using culture and science as a bridge between members of various ethnic backgrounds. Many Jewish community programmes promote cultural and scientific exchange. More than 34 such projects have been successfully organised in recent years.

2008 was a particularly important year for us, firstly because Israel turned 60. In addition, some organisations active within the community were celebrating special anniversaries of their own. The veterans club turned 15, and the Achva e.V. club for seniors celebrated its 20th year.

The Science Society celebrated its 10th birthday the previous year.

Other clubs and associations include the senior citizens club “Massoret”, the Centre for Jews from the Caucasus and Central Asia, “Dom Deribas”, a badminton club, theatre group and veteran’s choir.
